Nurturing creativity at Anchorage’s original high school

West High’s visual arts program provides a creative outlet for all art abilities and grade levels. Students build technical skills, connect what they are learning to the world around them, and become part of a greater creative community at West Anchorage High School.

Students who have limited art experience start with the basics, learning from instructors and more advanced students while growing their capabilities and confidence. Students who are highly skilled and experienced will be challenged to push the boundaries of their abilities to the next level by identifying points of focus for their body of work.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to respond to calls for art, competitions, and scholarships while developing their unique artistic voice. Practical application opportunities like designing logos for West High clubs and creating brochure cover art for graduation are common. Pursuing opportunities within the Anchorage and Alaskan arts communities are also valued within the program.
