Our Mission

The purpose of the Anchorage School District (ASD) Visual Art Program, K-12, is to provide every child with a well rounded, sequential, and comprehensive art education. Through studies in the arts, students will gain the essential knowledge as defined by the district, state, and national standards. Education in the visual arts and through the arts is essential for the 21st century, and a complete approach to learning includes a cumulative visual arts education for grades K-12.

A comprehensive, articulated arts education program engages students in a process that helps them develop their self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperative teamwork, and self-motivation necessary for success in life. It is the goal of Anchorage School District’s Visual Arts Program to ensure all students have access to a rich education and understanding that the arts provide.

All ASD elementary students receive art twice a month. They are engaged in a rich curriculum including: drawing, painting, printmaking, painting, fiber, sculpture, ceramics, collage, and art/cultural appreciation.

As students move on to the middle and high school levels, they can continue their visual arts education through a variety of survey courses designed to enhance the development of artistic skills, style, technique, and comprehension. Content specific advanced courses are available to high school students to further develop their art potential, including pottery, painting, and IB Visual Arts. In addition, opportunities are available such as art competitions, exhibits and enrichment programs.
